These are national published references, not measured prices for La Porte. No city multiplier is applied. Start with the selected height range; if chosen, apply the access allowance, then add the stump allowance. Results are rounded outward to the nearest $25. A “+” means the upper end is open; every range may be exceeded by an actual job.

Indiana tree-work decisions

La Porte removal needs a clear public-tree decision where relevant and a complete private hauling scope. The Street Department does not collect whole trees cut by owners or contractors; the stump, surface finish and accepted receiving route should be settled before cutting.

Ask Engineering what approval covers this tree

The City’s tree-service request instructions require approval before right-of-way tree removal and set out conditions for public-tree work. Identify the tree, location and reason for removal, and ask Engineering which approval, marking and completion conditions apply. Do not rely on a broad reading of a branch-size statement to authorize a whole-tree project.

Engineering and Building handles tree assessment and trimming/removal requests. The submission is a request for a decision, not an immediate work order or promise that the City will pay. Ask who undertakes the work, who pays and what documents need to be kept. If the tree is privately controlled, clarify any other applicable review and the owner’s authority separately.

Obtain the assessment supporting removal

A removal recommendation should explain the problem and the tree’s relationship to people, structures and other targets. Ask what findings make removal preferable to retention, whether pruning or further investigation is reasonable, and what uncertainty remains. Do not equate a declining appearance or a contractor’s availability with a finding that immediate removal is necessary.

Share any City instruction with every estimator so they address the same tree and outcome. If the City has not determined that the tree is dead or dangerous, do not describe it that way in the brief. When multiple trees are involved, identify each approval and assessment separately; one decision should not silently authorize clearing neighboring trees.

Define the stump and restoration before comparing prices

La Porte’s public-tree request conditions describe stump grinding and a finish blending with the surroundings, along with owner restoration responsibilities. Have Engineering confirm the actual terms, including timing, for the approved job. Do not assume a private contractor’s base cutting price satisfies those public-tree completion conditions.

For private work too, state whether the stump remains, is ground, or needs another treatment for the intended next use. Ask who removes grindings, supplies fill and restores the surface, and how buried-service precautions will be handled. If a later building or landscape project affects the required finish, disclose it during estimating. A stump lowered near ground level and a restored planting area are different outcomes.

Arrange hauling without relying on the brush route

The Street Department FAQ expressly excludes whole trees cut by a resident or contractor. Reported qualifying brush and limbs are a separate service. Ask any firm proposing curbside debris storage to identify the actual confirmation and eligible material; do not treat the branch route as the missing hauling line in a whole-tree contract.

The County’s 724 Zigler Road compost facility lists trees, branches and clean stumps. It excludes trash, fencing, railroad ties and landscaping timbers. Verify current access, fees and whether the hauler and actual material are accepted. A root ball with soil or a mixed load from structure damage needs a specific answer rather than the assumption that everything came from a yard.

If you retain wood, specify its form and agreed storage place. If it all leaves, identify who is responsible for the whole load and for any rejection. A complete proposal should not transfer an unknown disposal problem back to the owner after the tree has been dismantled.

Discuss equipment and protection in the actual space

Ask where machinery will enter, stand and load, and how the contractor will manage gates, public passage and features to retain. Confirm any needed access across another property and any public-space arrangements before accepting a method that depends on them. Give each estimator the same constraints so one quote does not assume a route the other has correctly excluded.

Where nearby oaks will remain, discuss avoiding additional injury and the schedule for any associated pruning. The City’s public-tree conditions restrict oak pruning between April and October; Purdue’s species-aware guidance supports a separate discussion of objective and timing. Neither source diagnoses the tree or substitutes for site-specific access planning.

Separate utility scope, budget reference and final agreement

Contact the actual electric operator before ordinary work near electrical hazards. NIPSCO says its storm crews clear what repairs require and do not remove resulting debris. Utility work is not a full private removal, stump and restoration package. Ask what remains to be handled after the site is cleared for the contractor.

Use the shared calculator only as a national one-tree planning reference. There is no verified La Porte price multiplier or local quote in its output. Compare written estimates covering the assessed tree, approval responsibilities, access, hauling, stump finish and repair. Ask about insurance, taxes and the process for approving changed conditions.

For a second property, Michigan City removal planning includes that City’s separate business-license and public-permit checks. A firm working across the county needs the appropriate requirements for each job. Neither municipal guide establishes the firm’s present credentials or capacity without verification.

Work-brief checklist

  • Tree: Record the recommendation and applicable city conditions.
  • Access: Agree equipment route and retained-tree protection.
  • Finish: Specify hauling, stump choices and any remaining grindings or wood.

Questions about this work

Will La Porte collect my contractor’s whole tree?

The Street Department says it does not collect whole trees cut by owners or contractors. Include hauling and an accepted receiver in the contract. Any qualifying smaller brush requires its own confirmation and does not resolve the trunk or stump.

Are public-tree approval and stump work connected?

The City publishes completion conditions including stump grinding and restoration for its tree-request process. Ask Engineering which conditions and deadlines apply to your approval. Then make sure the contractor’s written scope actually delivers that finish.

Can I compare a cutting-only price with the calculator?

The calculator is a national planning reference, not the price or authorization for your La Porte job. A cutting-only quote may leave hauling, stump work, access arrangements and repairs excluded. Compare those line items before deciding what the total means.
