These are national published references, not measured prices for Cary. No city multiplier is applied. Start with the selected height range; if chosen, apply the access allowance, then add the stump allowance. Results are rounded outward to the nearest $25. A “+” means the upper end is open; every range may be exceeded by an actual job.

North Carolina tree-work decisions

Before removing a Cary tree, ask Planning whether champion-tree, buffer or other required-landscape provisions apply. A removal contract should then describe the protected access route, stump finish and accepted hauling destination, rather than relying on household disposal services.

Confirm that removal answers the actual concern

Identify the tree and explain why it is being considered for removal: condition, structural concern, a site conflict or associated development. Ask whether retaining it with a defined intervention is practical. When condition is uncertain, an assessment should precede the irreversible decision. A photograph can locate the tree for a request, but it cannot settle root stability, internal condition or a removal method.

Request a written recommendation that distinguishes the reason for removal from the proposed way of doing the work. If the recommendation is based on a defect, ask what further investigation is necessary and what alternatives were considered. Do not wait near a tree that appears to be failing; immediate threats need the relevant emergency or utility response before ordinary estimate appointments.

Check champion and required-landscape status

Cary's tree-protection section restricts disturbance or removal of champion trees except as the ordinance allows. It also addresses tree preservation in buffers, streetscapes and floodplains. Ask Planning to determine whether the tree or its surroundings fall within those provisions. Do not turn a single size observation or an informal neighborhood opinion into a permit decision.

The required-landscape section separately regulates removal, disturbance and severe pruning in designated landscape areas. Bring the approved plan or plat if you have it and identify any construction or grading that accompanies the tree work. Ask who submits the applicable request and what written determination must be obtained before starting. This process description does not establish that every Cary yard tree has identical requirements.

Show how the crew will reach the tree

The maintenance provision also addresses unnecessary equipment intrusion and storage in protected root areas. Ask bidders to show their machine access, loading area, temporary material location and protection for retained vegetation. A proposal that protects the target's neighbors is more complete than one concerned only with getting the trunk down. Include the restoration obligations for surfaces or planting affected by access.

Where a proposed route crosses neighboring land, obtain that owner's permission. Where the work touches public land or utility facilities, coordinate with the responsible entity. Do not use the presence of an easement as permission for any machinery or cutting you choose. Have the contractor state its method's requirements so the relevant reviewer can evaluate the whole operation, not just a marked tree.

Require a destination for brush, trunk and stump material

Cary's yard-waste guidance excludes contractors from the Citizen's Convenience Center. Ordinary resident branch preparation and the Town's requested chipper service do not automatically qualify a commercial removal load. Ask the contractor to confirm a suitable commercial receiving destination before quoting hauling. If a household service is proposed for any portion, obtain the Town's eligibility determination for that exact arrangement.

Specify what remains after cutting. Removing branches, hauling heavy trunk sections, grinding a stump and removing grindings are distinct activities. If wood is retained, mark the agreed location and format. If planting or lawn restoration is part of the job, define it separately. An apparent saving from omitted hauling can leave a difficult second job that should have been visible in the original comparison.

Build a comparable removal request

Send every bidder one tree identification, one set of access constraints and one completion specification. Ask for the applicable review responsibility, protection measures, material outcome and change procedure in writing. The shared calculator supplies a national one-tree planning reference; it is not measured Cary pricing and does not incorporate a parcel's protected landscape or a contractor's exact receiving fees.

Consider a removal beside required screening. One proposal may leave large wood onsite and use the screen's root area for equipment; another may include accepted hauling and an alternative access method. Compare the final obligations before interpreting their prices. Where replacement is required, identify who will supply it and how its specification will be confirmed. Verify business and insurance information directly before agreeing to work.

Questions about this work

Can a champion tree simply be removed with the owner's consent?

Owner consent alone does not establish compliance. The Cary code restricts champion-tree disturbance and removal, and Planning must identify the applicable path. Obtain the determination for the specific tree, project and protected area before authorizing work.

Will the Town chip everything from a full removal?

The requested chipper service has its own material limits and fees. It is not evidence that an entire removal, stump or contractor load is eligible. Confirm the proposed arrangement with the Town and include a commercial hauling alternative where needed.

What should the stump option say?

State whether the stump remains, is ground or is otherwise removed, and how grindings and final ground restoration are handled. Do not assume these are included in a tree-removal line item. Keep any required replacement planting visible as well.
