North Carolina tree-work decisions

Durham pruning starts with two checks: whether the tree is City-controlled and what branch objective is justified. Use One Call for uncertain public trees, and compare private pruning scopes with specific access, retained-canopy and branch-handling outcomes.

Turn the concern into a pruning objective

Mark the branch conflict or describe the structural objective without prescribing a blanket reduction. Roof clearance, damaged-branch removal and formative work on a young tree are different outcomes. Ask the arborist to identify the intervention, retained growth and any need for assessment. If the concern is a new lean or significant split, appearance-focused pruning may not be the first useful service.

The NC State pruning resource explains purposeful branch selection and the importance of professional judgment for large-tree work. Discuss species, age, vigor and the reason for pruning when scheduling. Do not choose a percentage because it appears in a general guide or use a single timing rule for every tree. Request an explanation of how the proposed work addresses this tree's problem.

Let the City determine uncertain street and alley responsibility

The Durham Urban Forestry FAQ says City trees include those on City property and opened, maintained City rights-of-way. It distinguishes private and unopened routes, so a tree along an alley is not classified merely by being beside pavement. Use Durham One Call to request a determination rather than asking a private crew to make an ownership assumption.

The Urban Forestry division manages public-tree pruning and other maintenance. An inspection may lead to work, monitoring or a finding that the tree is private; a request is not a guaranteed pruning order. If it is private, confirm any applicable site protections and permission before scheduling. If it is public, do not assume frontage ownership authorizes your contractor to cut it.

Agree the work area as well as the crown

Ask bidders where workers, equipment and vehicles will operate and how nearby plants and surfaces will be protected. Note overhead lines, fences, neighboring land and the loading location. Utility clearance requires coordination with the actual operator. Do not touch a branch or wire to check contact, and do not assume an ordinary pruning crew has authority to undertake every line-related operation.

Set a clear procedure for unexpected findings. If the crew discovers a defect requiring wider assessment, have it explain the issue and seek approval for non-urgent added scope. Keep pruning and removal as separate decisions rather than authorizing either at the crew's discretion. Record access consent where neighboring land is needed and identify who repairs any surface affected by the chosen approach.

Check the branch route before selecting a cleanup option

Durham's optional yard-waste service uses the brown cart every other week. It also offers requested bulky brush pickups with pieces under four inches in diameter and less than four feet long. Verify the residence's participation and the actual project's eligibility, especially for contractor-generated material. A cart already at the address is not proof that every pile will be taken.

For hired hauling, the Yard Waste Facility accepts eligible commercial vegetative loads as well as residential material. Ask the contractor to confirm the actual branches, vehicle, payment and unloading conditions. Keep soil, metal, plastic and building debris out of that route. A proposal should state whether branches leave, chips remain at an agreed location or some other accepted material outcome applies.

Compare results with one marked request

Imagine a tree shading a driveway with one roof-contacting limb. A selective-clearance proposal and a broad crown-reduction proposal should be judged against the same objective, with each bidder explaining the retained canopy and reason for its approach. Keep ground protection and hauling obligations identical so the cost comparison is meaningful. The amount of material cut is not a measure of success.

Ask the accepted quote to identify the trees, objectives, limits, material outcome and any follow-up. At the final walkthrough, review those items from the ground and note any recommendations for later care. Check current City operations before relying on a household collection or facility trip; temporary notices can change logistics without changing the agreed pruning objective. Verify contractor information directly before engagement.

Questions about this work

Can I hire someone to trim an uncertain alley tree?

First ask Durham to determine responsibility. Opened, maintained City rights-of-way differ from private and unopened routes. A private contractor's estimate does not establish who may authorize cutting or which authority must review it.

Should all my trees be cut to the same height?

That is an appearance request rather than a tree-specific pruning objective. Ask about each tree's species, structure and condition, and identify the problem you need solved. The appropriate amount and timing of intervention can differ.

Can the City take branches left by my pruning crew?

Confirm the exact arrangement with One Call before relying on household service. Subscription and small-branch preparation do not alone establish contractor eligibility. Have the quote include a confirmed hauling route if public collection is unavailable.
